Milk Thistle: Milk Thistle is an herb that helps in cleaning and protecting the liver from environmental toxins like alcohol, drugs, heavy metals, pollution and pesticides. This herb contains silymarin and few other flavonoids that are considered to have most potential in protecting a liver. The flavonoids are the important and most powerful antioxidants that protect liver from damages caused by free radicals.
- There are many reported Milk Thistle health benefits. Some of these include:
- Liver disease from alcohol (treatment for alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis)
- Viral hepatitis (widely used in the treatment of viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis C)
- Anti-cancer effect
Burdock extract: Burdock has number of vitamins that is important for the proper functioning of the liver. The vitamins in Burdock include vitamins B1, B6 and B12. These vitamins are necessary for the function of phase 1 liver detoxification. Vitamin E which is considered to be one of the most important antioxidant and sulphur is used in the phase 2 detoxification of the liver. The Burdock also contains other components like arctiin, which improves the overall liver and gall bladder function.
A research study posted on the PubMed.gov website describes the study of burdock's effects on the liver. The study looked at what effects burdock might have on livers that have been damaged by alcohol consumption. The results seemed to show that burdock helped the liver to heal and acted to protect it from further damage. The conclusion was that burdock's powerful antioxidants may be responsible, at least in part, for the results.
This blend is formulated to cleanse the liver and promote healthy liver function. Milk Thistle is a unique herb which contains a natural compound called silymarin. Silymarin nourishes the liver like no other nutrient currently known. The liver acts as the body's filter constantly cleansing to protect you from toxins. Over time, these toxins can accumulate in the liver. Milk Thistle's potent antioxidant properties and rejuvenating actions help keep the liver strong and healthy. Burdock Root is one of the foremost cleansing herbs, providing nourishing support for the blood, the liver, and the natural defense system. It's rich in Vitamins B-1, B-6, B-12, and E, plus manganese, copper, iron, zinc, sulfur, and more. You'll find Burdock Root in many tonic formulas and special blends designed for internal cleansing.
Herbalist Michael Tierra states that milk thistle is a liver protectant and rejuvenator. He suggests using an extract from the seeds to treat liver cirrhosis and hepatitis A and B. Regarding burdock, he suggests using the crushed seeds in a decoction to treat skin irritations, urinary disorders and to purify the blood. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, burdock root is commonly used by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat sore throats. Burdock contains inulin, a dietary fiber, which may help with digestion
Other health benefits of Burdock extract:

The percentage of patients with AST normalization was 22% after 3 months and 20% after 6 month in Group A. The figures were 46%after 3 month and 62% after 6 month in the silymarin-treated group. The difference between the two groups at the end of therapy was significant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the liver?
A. The liver is the largest glandular organ of the body. It weighs about 3 lb (1.36 kg). It is reddish brown in color and is divided into four lobes of unequal size and shape. The liver lies on the right side of the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm.
Blood is carried to the liver via two large vessels called the hepatic artery and the portal vein. The hepatic artery carries oxygen-rich blood from the aorta (a major vessel in the heart). The portal vein carries blood containing digested food from the small intestine. These blood vessels subdivide in the liver repeatedly, terminating in very small capillaries. Each capillary leads to a lobule. Liver tissue is composed of thousands of lobules, and each lobule is made up of hepatic cells, the basic metabolic cells of the liver.
Q. What is its major function?
A. The liver has many functions. Some of the functions are: to produce substances that break down fats, convert glucose to glycogen, produce urea (the main substance of urine), make certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), filter harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol), storage of vitamins and minerals (vitamins A, D, K and B12) and maintain a proper level or glucose in the blood. The liver is also responsible for producing cholesterol. It produces about 80% of the cholesterol in your body.
Q. What arediseases of the liver?
A. Several diseases states can affect the liver. Some of the diseases are Wilson's disease, hepatitis (an inflammation of the liver), liver cancer, and cirrhosis (a chronic inflammation that progresses ultimately to organ failure). Alcohol alters the metabolism of the liver, which can have overall detrimental effects if alcohol is taken over long periods of time. Hemochromatosis can cause liver problems.
Q. What can go wrong?
Your liver is a very uncomplaining organ. There is very little evidence that the liver has an ageing problem and without disease it can function fully right into old age. Most liver disease does not show symptoms and, when it does, the symptoms are often vague. There are hundreds of liver disorders but some are quite rare. The most common are:
